E-notarization – Sworn Statement for Family Gift of Used Vehicle

WHICH FAMILY MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR MY VEHICLE TRANSFER?

• Spouse or common law spouse;
• Parent, step-parent, or parents-in-law;
• Grandparent or step-grandparent;
• Children, step-children, or children-in-law;
• Grandchildren or step-grandchildren; and
• Siblings, half-siblings, or adopted siblings.

WHAT SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION DO I NEED TO PROVIDE TO SERVICE ONTARIO?

• Completed Form 1157E Sworn Statement for Family Gift of Used Vehicle;
• Proof of Ontario vehicle insurance;
• Your Ontario driver’s licence;
• Vehicle Ownership Permit;
• Safety Standards Certificate (not required for spouse-to-spouse transfers); and
• Completed Plate Transfer Declaration (if you are also transferring the licence plate – this is required on spouse-to-spouse transfers in order to be exempt from the Safety Standards Certificate).

CAN THIS BE NOTARIZED ONLINE?

Yes! As of September 17, 2020, the Government of Ontario confirmed it will accept electronically signed and notarized copies of Form 1157E Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Vehicle.
