New Visa Requirements for Mexican Citizens Traveling to Canada

Recent changes to Canada’s immigration policy have introduced new travel requirements for Mexican citizens, altering the way they can visit the country. As of February 29, 2024, the Canadian government has updated its electronic travel authorization (eTA) and visitor visa process for Mexican nationals. This shift emphasizes the importance of careful planning and documentation to ensure entry into Canada, especially for those who previously enjoyed streamlined access.

Key Changes in the eTA and Visitor Visa Process

Under the new regulations, Mexican citizens must either apply for an eTA—if eligible—or obtain a visitor visa before traveling to Canada. Key changes include:

  • Eligibility for eTA: Only Mexican citizens with a valid U.S. nonimmigrant visa or those who have held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years can apply for an eTA.
  • Visitor Visa Requirements: If travellers are no longer eligible for an eTA, they must apply for a visitor visa. This document costs CAN$100, and applicants may also need to submit biometric data (fingerprints and photos), which adds an additional CAN$85 fee.
  • Impact on Prior eTA Holders: If you were issued an eTA before February 29, 2024, and do not have a valid study or work permit, your eTA is now cancelled.

This change requires all travellers to check their status and determine whether they need to apply for an eTA or a visitor visa before departure. For more detailed information on these changes, visit Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Citizenship website.

Impact on Mexican Travellers

These new visa requirements make traveling to Canada more complex for Mexican citizens. Those planning to visit Canada for tourism, business, or short-term studies (less than six months) will need to either:

  • Apply for an eTA under the new guidelines, or
  • Submit a visitor visa application if they no longer meet eTA requirements.

It’s essential to remember that even if you qualify for an eTA, your family members may still need a visa, so coordination and early preparation are key to avoiding delays.

Steps for a Successful Visa Application
To navigate this process smoothly, Mexican citizens should:

1. Check their eligibility for eTA under the new rules.

2. If ineligible, apply for a visitor visa, ensuring all required documents are prepared:

  • A valid Mexican passport.
  • Financial proof for your stay.
  • Biometrics (if required).

3. Meet deadlines early: Applications can take several weeks to process, so apply as early as possible to avoid disrupting your travel plans.

These changes highlight the importance of being proactive when applying, as even small mistakes in documentation or missed biometric appointments can delay or derail your travel plans.

Whether you’re applying for a visitor visa or an eTA, our online and mobile notary services can ensure your paperwork is complete and meets the new requirements. If you’re unsure which documents need to be notarized, we can help guide you through the process, saving you time and reducing stress.

For travellers, proper documentation is crucial. We can assist with biometric verification forms, financial records, and any other documents that require authentication before submission.

What to Expect Upon Arrival in Canada

Once your visa is approved, you’ll need to prepare for enhanced screening upon arrival in Canada. Immigration officials may ask for further details about your stay, including proof of financial means or a detailed itinerary. Be ready to answer questions about your travel purpose and ensure that all your documents are in order.

Travellers arriving by air with an eTA should ensure they have a valid passport and meet all entry requirements. Those arriving by other methods (car, bus, train, or boat) will still need a visitor visa even if they are eligible for an eTA by air.

At Notable Notary, we understand how vital it is to stay updated with these new visa requirements. If you need help notarizing or authenticating documents for your travel, we’re here to support you.
