This was done through Bill 190, COVID-19 Response and Reforms to Modernize Ontario Act, 2020, enacted as of May 12, 2020. 

Online notarization allows you to meet remotely with a notary public, at the place and time that is most convenient for you. This can be also be referred to as e-notarization, virtual notarization, virtual commissioning, or remote notarization. While this is different from the traditional way of notarizing and commissioning documents, it is 100% legal in Ontario.

How does it work?

In order to meet the requirements of Bill 190, all notary and commissioning businesses must comply with the following:

• All clients must be prepared to show their notary a piece of Government-Issued Photo ID before having their documents notarized
• All clients will need a device suitable for video chat (laptop/cell-phone) and a scanner ready for use. If a client does not have a scanner readily available, phone apps or clear and high quality pictures of the documents can be used. If clients would like to electronically sign their documents, a scanner may not be required
