It seems like a small thing. The document was sitting there, everything looked right, so you signed it. Now you’re wondering if that’s going to be a problem at your notary appointment.
It might be. Here’s why, and what you can do about it.
Why the Document Has to Be Unsigned
Notarization isn’t just about confirming that a signature exists. It’s about confirming that a specific person signed a specific document willingly, knowingly, and in the presence of the notary. If you’ve already signed, the notary has no way to verify any of that. They weren’t there.
This is one of the most common reasons notary appointments hit a wall. People arrive with completed, signed documents assuming the notary just needs to add their stamp. That’s not how it works.
What Actually Happens If You’ve Already Signed?
A few scenarios play out depending on the document:
- The notary will ask you to sign again. If the document allows for it, some notaries will have you re-sign or initial in their presence to satisfy the witnessing requirement.
- The document may need to be reissued. For documents from a government office, a bank, or a legal firm, you may need to request a fresh copy and start again.
- The appointment cannot proceed. For certain documents, sworn affidavits and statutory declarations especially, the oath or affirmation must be administered before signing. If you’ve already signed, there’s no valid way to complete the notarization.
The Simple Fix
Don’t sign anything until the notary tells you to. Bring your document unsigned, with your government-issued photo ID, and let the notary walk you through the rest.
If you’re not sure whether you should sign something before your appointment, reach out first. It takes two minutes to confirm and it can save you a wasted trip, or having to start over with a new document.
Before Your Appointment, Have This Ready
- Your document completed but unsigned
- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Any supporting documents referenced in the main document
- Any required witnesses, arranged in advance
