A notary public is a public official appointed by the Attorney General’s Office to help deter fraud. 

The Ontario Notaries Act sets out who can be a notary and what they can do. In Ontario, notaries are appointed by the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General pursuant to the Ontario Notaries Act. Generally, notaries in Ontario are licensed lawyers or paralegals and are members in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario. 

The main functions of a notary are to witness and authenticate the execution of certain documents, and verify the identity of the signers. This includes legally verifying that signatures, marks and copies of documents are true or genuine, as well as, legally administering oaths, affirmations or statutory declarations. The proper authentication of such documents are recognized with the use of a notary’s seal and signature.
