WHAT IS A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE APOSTILLE?

Getting Your Ontario Marriage Certificate Ready for Use Abroad

An apostille is a certificate that authenticates your Ontario marriage certificate for legal use in another Hague Convention member country, confirming the signature, seal, or stamp on it is genuine. It's commonly required for spousal sponsorship, name change recognition, property and inheritance matters, and residency applications abroad.

No Notarization Needed

Since this document is issued directly by the Ontario government, it's already apostille-ready. We submit it to ODS as-is, no notarization step required.

THE DETAILS

What Your Ontario Marriage Certificate Actually Shows

Your Ontario marriage certificate is issued by the Office of the Registrar General (ORG) and confirms the date and place of your marriage, along with both spouses' legal names. It's different from the keepsake marriage certificate you may have received from your officiant at the ceremony, which isn't a government record and can't be apostilled. If you're not sure which document you have, send us a photo before placing your order and we'll confirm.

Spousal Sponsorship & Immigration

Foreign immigration authorities commonly require an apostilled marriage certificate as proof of the marital relationship when sponsoring a spouse or applying for a dependent visa.

Name Change Recognition Abroad

Foreign banks, employers, and government offices often require an apostilled marriage certificate before they'll recognize a legal name change tied to marriage.

Property & Inheritance Matters

An apostilled marriage certificate is often required abroad to establish marital status for property transfers, estate matters, and spousal benefit claims.

Pension & Survivor Benefits

Foreign pension plans and survivor benefit programs often require an apostilled marriage certificate to confirm eligibility for spousal or survivor claims.

Divorce Proceedings Abroad

If you're filing for divorce in another country, the court will typically require an apostilled copy of your original marriage certificate as part of the filing.

Registering Your Marriage Abroad

Some countries require you to formally register a foreign marriage with their own vital records office, which usually starts with an apostilled marriage certificate.

TWO WAYS TO DO THIS

Apostille the Original, or Notarize a Certified True Copy First?

Ontario's Official Documents Services can apostille your original marriage certificate directly, since it's a government-issued vital record. But you also have the option of having a notary certify a true copy of your marriage certificate, which is then apostilled in place of the original. Both are legitimate, commonly used paths. Here's how they compare.

Option A: Apostille the Original

Best when: the receiving country or institution expects to see the original government document, and you don't need the certificate for anything else in the meantime.

Trade-off: your one-of-a-kind certificate travels through the submission and return process. If you need it back quickly for something else, factor that into your timeline.

Option B: Notarize a Copy, Then Apostille the Copy

Best when: you want to keep your original safe at home, or you may need to apostille the same document again later for a different country or purpose.

Trade-off: adds a notarization step and fee, and not every destination country or institution accepts a certified copy in place of the original. Always confirm with the receiving party first.

Not sure which option fits your situation? Reach out before you order and we'll help you decide based on where your marriage certificate is headed.

A couple of things ODS is strict about: they only accept hard-copy originals or notarized documents, electronic or scanned copies can't be authenticated. If your document bundle is thicker than a quarter inch, it needs two holes punched in the upper-left corner for the certificate to attach, we take care of this for you as part of preparing your order.
COMMON REASONS CLIENTS NEED THIS

Why Clients Apostille Their Marriage Certificate

Spousal Sponsorship & Immigration

Foreign immigration authorities commonly require an apostilled marriage certificate as proof of the marital relationship.

Name Change Recognition Abroad

Banks, employers, and government agencies abroad often require an apostilled marriage certificate to recognize a legal name change.

Property & Inheritance Matters

An apostilled marriage certificate is often required to establish marital status for property transfers or estate matters abroad.

AVOID THESE DELAYS

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Sending the ceremony keepsake certificate

The decorative certificate from your officiant isn't a government record and can't be apostilled. You need the one issued by Ontario's Office of the Registrar General.

Only apostilling one of two documents you'll need

Spousal sponsorship and immigration applications often ask for both an apostilled marriage certificate and an apostilled birth certificate. Check the full list before you order.

Assuming a copy will always be accepted

Not every embassy or receiving institution accepts a notarized copy in place of the original marriage certificate. Confirm this before choosing that path.

Missing a required name-change document

If a name changed again after marriage, some receiving institutions want that documented too. Check ahead so you're not stuck mid-process.

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE APOSTILLE FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need the original marriage certificate, or will a copy work?

ODS requires the original, government-issued Ontario marriage certificate. A photocopy cannot be apostilled.

How long does a marriage certificate apostille take?

7–10 business days when we hand deliver it to ODS, versus a minimum of 15 business days plus shipping time if mailed in yourself.

Does my marriage certificate need to be notarized first?

No. Since it's issued directly by the Ontario government, it's already apostille-ready and doesn't need notarization.

What if I was married outside Ontario?

We only process documents issued by the Ontario government. If your marriage certificate was issued elsewhere, contact us and we can point you in the right direction.

Can I apostille a marriage certificate and birth certificate together?

Yes, you can include multiple documents in the same order and pay the discounted rate for each additional apostille.

What if my destination country isn't a Hague member?

Your marriage certificate instead needs authentication and legalization through a Canadian authority and that country's embassy or consulate. We can guide you through this.

For official, government-sourced details on how authentication and apostilles work in Ontario, see Ontario's Official Documents Services guide and the full list of Hague Apostille Convention member countries.
